US Games sent over the delightful and adorable Happy Halloween Tarot deck for me to review and share with you. Ya’ll this deck is everything I could want in an autumn or Halloween themed deck!! It’s so fun, cute, and charming. 

This is brand new and releases on Nov. 8

First off, I LOVE the color palate (orange, yellow, black, and white). Everything pops! The creator says she was inspired by a candy corn color palate and it is perfection! And the cardbacks definitely call up memories of bowls of candy corn at Halloween. 

If you need a deck to lift your spirits this holiday season, this is it! 

My mood just soars looking at these stunning images and colors! Soni Graves (the creator) says she found inspiration in iconic vintage Halloween art as well as her own childhood Halloween memories and the joy they brought her. Yes! That’s the vibe I’ve been searching for this season!

This deck is the best themed deck that I’ve seen. It makes me think instantly of all the joys from my childhood - all the spooky feels, the joy I always felt every October, all the costumes I used to dress up in Oct. 31st, and all the trick or treat candy we used to gather in our buckets/baskets as we knocked on doors Halloween night. Those were the best times of my childhood, and these cards bring all that back for me. It’s so whimsical and festive! 

10/10 for Halloween vibes and JOY!

In this deck, Soni includes spooky creatures, witches, bats, black cats, pumpkins, brooms, chalices, monsters, skeletons, spiders, and ghosts. And Soni says as an homage to her Latin heritage, she chose to use Spanglish titles and gender-neutral descriptions for the Court Cards. Page = Paje, Knight = Caballere, Queen = Reine and King = Rey. Shown below. Love this! It makes it such a unique deck with this special touch.

It shuffles like a dream. The cards have a linen finish (my favorite kind) and feels so lush! And they have ghostly gray edges – nice creative touch here. There’s a 128-page illustrated guidebook with custom spreads, cards measure 2.75” x 4.75”. Packaged in a sturdy, two-piece box measuring 4.5” x 6.5”. 

The only complaint I could see anyone making about this deck would be that the minor arcana are mostly pip style which isn’t my favorite but these are so darn cute that it doesn’t phase me at all when I read with it.

This was originally an indie deck funded through kickstarter and I secretly lusted after this deck at that time and had it on my list to watch, but now that it’s mass market I’m over the moon about it and just had to share it with you! 

It makes me SO happy and joyful that I’m definitely going to keep using this well past Halloween just to give myself a little treat. This may be my happiest, most joyful deck in my collection! 

In the guidebook, the creator provides a description of the image she's created for the card and how it relates to the traditional card meaning. Then she gives meanings as she understands them for that card, focusing on the upright position of the card. She does touch on the lightness and darkness of each card if you read reversals. She gives us a few questions for each card for journaling purposes to make you think on the themes of that particular card and how it may be applying to you at that moment in time. 

I love reading the creator's vision for the cards, and Soni definitely provides a unique perspective. For example, her version of the Fool is a hypnotized clown (a jovial jester) with no cares in the world, lured by the call of a new adventure. Their sidekick cat, Little Luna, is anxious when her friend takes off on this risky venture, and she tries to remind her friend that they've never tried this particular trick before and they need to be careful to avoid injury/hurt. She gives us these questions to contemplate if we've pulled the Fool card:

What new opportunities can I apply myself to right now?

Will I listen to internal or external validation to make the best choice?

Will I listen to the logic in my head or the calling of my heart?

What am I willing to risk in order to achieve my dreams?

The guidebook also includes 3 customs spreads: Frightful Good Time Spread, Speak to Spirits Spread, and Recharging Spread. And a cute Halloween Poem by the creator greets us at the beginning of the guidebook.

Ideal for kids/teens or any lover of autumn/Halloween/spooky season.

Soni created this deck as a gift to herself. She wanted a deck that represented how she saw Halloween from her perspective, and I think she nailed exactly what I've been looking for all these years in my hunt for the best Halloween deck. I've finally found it! I see this as the big sister to the Halloween Tarot also by US Games. It has similar magical and joyful vibes, but the Happy Halloween Tarot has a bit more of a mature feel to it. I can't wait to read with them together.

About the Author 

Soni Graves is a Chilean American, who immigrated to the United States with her mom when she was eight. She is an only child, raised by a creative and loving, queer, single parent. Because of life circumstances Soni often lacked physical stability in her life, yet she always had a wild imagination and a love for creating her own worlds, which helped her to cope. Art was a way of expressing herself and communicating her thoughts, regardless of language challenges. Soni felt like an outsider most of her life, which brought her to appreciate the underdogs and outcasts of the world. Spending time alone resulted in the study and pondering of the unexplained or misunderstood. 

Tarot has been of interest to Soni since childhood, but she didn’t gift herself the opportunity to start reading tarot until 2016. She knew she wanted to create her own deck one day, once she felt comfortable with the cards. She hopes she did them justice. Today, Soni resides in the Heartland (Nebraska) with her husband Logan (also an artist).
