Insight Editions just sent over the brand new Beetlejuice Tarot deck for me to review and share with you. Hot off the presses! It was just released on Oct. 29^th just in time for Halloween but I received it a little later in early November. 

Beetlejuice…Beetlejuice…Beetlejuice! 

"The ghost with the most" haunts our readings this year as the Beetlejuice Tarot drops right during spooky season. Must have for fans of this 80s flick. I grew up on Beetlejuice. Micheal Keaton is one of the most versatile actors of our time morphing from Mr. Mom to Batman to the foul mouth, prankster spirit Betelgeuse. 

This deck brings Tim Burton’s peculiar, offbeat, twisted classic to life in these beautiful 78 tarot cards. Beetlejuice’s reckless, chaotic nature and penchant for mischief is perfectly represented throughout the cards, although I could definitely use even more Beetlejuice himself in the cards. They really do put every character from the film in this deck.

This deck dropped just in time to celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the first film and right as the sequel Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice hits streaming services after having been in theaters for a few months. By the way, did you catch Michael Keaton on SNL Oct. 19^th? He’s still got it!

This deck is for readers of all ages. And is perfect for any Halloween party or any fun get together during spooky season. October is my favorite month for tarot readings. There’s just something extra in the air this month of the year.

The illustrations for this fun and quirky tarot deck evoke all the haunting scenes from this spooky but hilarious film including our favorite characters from Adam and Barbara Maitland and Lydia Deetz to the ghastly characters in the Netherworld’s Waiting Room. 

This deck leans heavily into the theme, perfect for fans of the film. The Lovers card features Barbara and Adam Maitland in a tender moment (shown above), symbolizing the love between them that transcends death. How sweet! There are many tender moments in the film if you think about it, especially between Lydia and the Maitlands as she tries to help them move on.

The cardbacks are AMAZING with circus style artwork incorporating the sandworms, beetles, and the Beetlejuice sign from the film. So creative!

In The Fool card (shown above) we find Adam and Barbara Maitland inside the miniature town that Adam built and they’re at Beetlejuice’s grave about to meet the vulgar spirit haunting their attic. Perfect depiction here for the Fool card as they are definitely about to embark on a brand new adventure once they unleash Beetlejuice by calling his name 3 times. 

The Handbook for the Recently Deceased serves as our High Priestess card. I love this take as it represents the book of secrets the High Priestess holds in the traditional version. The Knight of Cups shows the moment when Beetlejuice is about to marry Lydia (against her will). Lydia Deetz is our Star representing our hope and healing! And the covered bridge where Adam and Barbara Maitland lost their life depicts the Tower. On the way home the Maitlands swerve to avoid a dog, which sends them into a river where they drown. Unaware that they are dead, the Maitlands return to the house, unsure how they got back so quickly.

Delia Deetz is our Queen of Wands and our Queen of Swords – played by the amazing and versatile Catherine O’Hara! She's very represented in the deck which delighted me as someone whose favorite movie is Home Alone and as a huge fan of Schitt's Creek. She's just fabulous!

There are no pips in this deck. There’s a corresponding scene from the film for each tarot card in the major and minor arcana that makes sense given the themes of the cards. For example, for the 5 of Swords we have the scene where Lydia is writing I am alone in her journal, and her morose, depressive persona is heavily represented in this deck, so if you are a fan of Lydia Deetz or Winona Ryder you will love this deck.

This deck comes with a fold-out map and guide that serves as the guidebook. This is the only drawback for this deck for me. I don’t think this fold out will be popular with readers. I always want a guidebook. The fold out is bulky and hard to manuever and could get worn over time after unfolding and folding again. 

The cards come in a sturdy, decorative box. 

If you love a deck with ghosts, ghouls, and haunting spirits with a zany sense of humor this deck is for you.

This is one of the best themed tarot decks I’ve seen as the whole movie feels represented through the arc of the deck. It taps into all the major themes, plotlines, and characters portrayed in the film and it’s just a bloody good time playing with these cards which is what we all want when reading with these themed decks. I think fans of the film will really appreciate the thought that went into planning this deck out.

Perfect for shadow work!

And can we just talk about the stunning colors and amazing artwork in this deck. It's illustrated by the wickedly talented Abigail Larson who also illustrated one of my favorite tarot decks - The Horror Tarot and The Nightmare Before Christmas Tarot as well as the Dark Wood Tarot. I just LOVE this striking artwork that so effectively brings Beetlejuice to life.

It has fun, creative twists on the tarot minors, too! If you haven’t seen the movie, it could be confusing as you may not understand all the meanings of the scenes tied to each of the cards. But fans will immediately understand the choices for each minor arcana card.

Overall, The Beetlejuice Tarot Deck by Insight Editions is a fantastically quirky addition for fans of the film. With its dark humor, haunting aesthetic, and surprising depth, it’s perfect for anyone looking to inject some ghostly fun into their tarot practice. Add a bit of twisted humor to your readings. If you’re a fan of Beetlejuice, have a taste for quirky decks, or enjoy exploring the darkly whimsical side of tarot, this deck is a must-have. It’s such a treat especially for spooky season when I’m always craving supernatural and ghostly vibes.
