This blog post goes along with Healing Thru Tarot Podcast Ep. 60: Psychological Profiles for the Wands Court Cards w/ Archetype Examples + Journey Navigation Spread
In this blog, I’ve constructed psychological profiles for each of the court cards in the Wands suit including positive and negative personality traits and a list of psychological conditions I think would be most prominent with this suit. These profiles will help us understand the court cards at a deeper level, especially if you often struggle to tell the court cards apart. And I share a 9-card spread I created that was inspired by the traits and characteristics of the Wands suit.
This is the third in a series of episodes where I want to construct psychological profiles for each of the court cards in all of the 4 tarot suits. The first episode was Ep. 56 where I covered the swords court cards and in Ep. 58 I discussed the pentacles suit. Today, we are focusing on the suit of wands since this is the suit associated with the spring months.
The suit of Wands represents not only spring but also the element of fire, which is related to the zodiac signs of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. So, if your sun is in one of these signs you may feel that one of these cards is your signifier. Or that could even be the case if your ascendant or moon sign is a fire sign because you’re more than just your sun sign. I’ve got a Sagittarius moon, so I understand this fiery nature.
Best Tarot Court Resource
For this blog, I’ll be drawing some information and examples from my favorite book on the court cards – Your Tarot Court by Ethony Dawn. And I’ll add my own examples of these personalities given my experience as a clinical psychologist who assesses, diagnoses, and treats psychological and personality disorders. Let’s dive in and start with the Page of Wands and work our way up to the King of Wands.
Page of Wands Psych Profile and Traits
The Page of Wands could be any of the 3 fire signs for ages 11 and under. The Page of Wands is the Peter Pan archetype according to Ethony. This extroverted, playful archetype is young at heart no matter their age and they retain their joyful, inquisitive approach to life even throughout their adult years. They are extremely optimistic about everything in life and they’re always up for an adventure like most Sagittarians I know. The beauty of this archetype is that they never lose that ability to see the magic and joy of life. They’re easy to spot in a crowd as they’re often the class clown, always craving attention. And they have a flair for dramatics and boy do they like to gossip. Think Jack Macfarland from Will and Grace – funny, charismatic, childlike and oh so lovable.
As part of the wands suit, they’re drawn to creative, inspirational, and spiritual ventures and are always keen on progressing on their spiritual studies. As pages, they’re only at the beginning of their spiritual journey, but they wholeheartedly embrace the journey ahead. Where they struggle is implementation of what they’ve learned or discovered because that requires maturity and responsibility, which they often lack given that their motto seems to be “never grow up.” Due to their boundless energy, enthusiasm, and zest for life, they could channel that energy into a healthy outlet like sports, dance, martial arts, theater, or something they could build with their hands.
Ideal Professions for Page of Wands
For work, they would be enticed by an apprenticeship because they love to tackle something new but once the work becomes difficult, they might quickly be off to the next shiny thing that catches their eye. They start a lot of projects, rarely finishing any of them. So, their resume could be one long string of brief stints across a variety of fields. Ethony notes that they are very good at getting others to do their work for them and that reminded me of Tom Sawyer when he dupes his friends into painting the fence for him by pretending how much he was enjoying it and how they were missing out. I wouldn’t be surprised to find pyramid schemes and multilevel marketing companies filled with this archetype, always looking to get rich fast by enlisting others to do the work. Over time, the problem becomes money because not keeping a steady job makes it near impossible to keep up with their bills.
This is the archetype who could end up couch surfing at friends' houses for years until they find a job they enjoy for more than a few months. I’m thinking of Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld, always stealing Jerry’s food and household items because he’s been out of work so long.
In the shadow, they’re impulsive, irrational, unwilling to take responsibility, slow to admit when they’re wrong, rash when making decisions, cruel and superficial at times, and they run away from challenges when things get hard. You will often see them throwing temper tantrums, acting out, and becoming argumentative when they’re ignored, challenged, or don’t get their way. In these moments, they may say things they later regret, landing them in trouble with employers, family, and friends.
They’re quick to fall in and out of love, making it hard to have lasting connections. As an adult they’re very passionate lovers and could have many relationships with younger people. So the passion is there but it doesn’t last. They like to keep things fun and enjoyable in work and in love, so the moment things get real or serious in either one, they’re off to greener pastures. Pete Davidson fits this description well. Ethony suggests Kevin Pearson from This is Us for this archetype and that certainly tracks. He’s clearly stunted at the adolescent phase, making endless irresponsible decisions and struggling to rise to the occasion, especially in love. Michael Jackson is the clearest example of the Peter Pan archetype in the real world, having named his own residence Neverland and famously remaining stunted in a childlike state for the entirety of his life.
Knight of Wands Psych Profile and Traits
The Knight of Wands is the Adventurer archetype and represents ages 12-21. He’s associated with the sign of Sagittarius. Like the Page of Wands, the Knight of Wands is carefree, fun-loving, active, and aims to live life to the fullest, traveling to as many places on the globe that they can. They love meeting new people from diverse cultures. They have a very authentic nature and are on a lifelong quest to know who they are at the soul level. This is the archetype that would make a long trek to meet with the Dalia Lama or embark on a spiritual pilgrimage or vision quest since the wands suit represents the spiritual and inspirational side of life. This means some will even be drawn to churches and even spiritual communes or large communal groups and could fall into a cult-like situation if they aren’t careful.
Like most Sagittarians, this knight is highly motivated, optimistic, open-minded, and adventurous. They’re always planning their next trip. They simply hate to sit still in one place.
They will bounce around between residences frequently throughout their lives, never feeling drawn to settle in one place. They embrace change as it doesn’t strike the fear in them that it does others. In fact, they can feel invincible at times, often taking risks others never would.
Ethony offers examples of this adventurous spirit like Indiana Jones, Doctor Who, and Laura Croft from Tomb Raider. People are naturally drawn to their adventurous personality. They have tons of friends but very few close ones. They don’t stick around long enough to develop lasting relationships, either romantic or platonic ones. They burn very brightly but shortly because they often overcommit and burn out before they can fulfill those commitments. These are the folks that leave home at an early age to get out of their hometowns and they rarely look back. They become experienced travelers, so you can always find them telling stories about their many thrilling adventures.
Captain Jack Sparrow is the epitome of this archetype for me, always spinning tales from Tortuga and keeping his eyes on the horizon, chasing his next adventure.
In the shadow, they can be selfish, careless, immature, restless, and unfulfilled, always seeking something better or bigger. Like we discussed with the Page of Wands, this Knight is also not ready to commit in relationships. And they’re so active and involved in so many activities that they don’t have the energy leftover for their partner. But if they do partner up it would be someone who loves to travel as much as they do. The problem is that they could be lying next to you in bed but dreaming of being halfway around the world at the same time.
Ideal Professions for Knight of Wands
For work, they’d be drawn to jobs such as a pilot or flight attendant as that would allow freedom and flexibility for their schedules and the opportunity to travel the world. They like to play by their own rules, and they don’t take too kindly to being limited, restricted, or told what to do. That’s the quickest way to drive them away. In order to be productive, it’s best for them to take advantage of any momentum that’s already started. They aren’t the best self-starters, but once they get that energy flowing, they can keep up that progressive flow.
Their strength comes with their adaptability. Because they’re always on the move and travel widely, they’ve got the experience of shifting with the ebbs and flow of change and transition.
They struggle with the boredom of mundane tasks or monotony, so their ideal job would often present them with challenges, push their limits, and allow them to think on their feet. Sales of any kind might be appealing to them especially if it has an element of competition or commission built in to increase their motivation. Working outside the office is such a plus for them. Working in a small, claustrophic cubicle would be soul crushing. Fast-paced and unpredictable environments could excite them as each day would offer a new experience, keeping them on their toes as the hours fly by. This knight would make an excellent inspirational speaker, allowing them to travel widely and work their stories and travels into their talks, and it would offer them the opportunity to inspire others to start their own spiritual journeys.
Queen of Wands Psych Profile and Traits
The Queen of Wands is the Performer archetype and is associated with the zodiac sign of Aries. This queen is magnetic, influential, sensual, protective, fiery, but very entitled. She’s also bold, powerful, and fearless! The Performer archetype is common for actors, actresses, musicians, and artists. They’re the life of the party and naturally charismatic. And they turn heads. It’s like your eyes are glued to them at all times. Prince fits this archetype to a tee. He even has a song in Purple Rain called “Baby I’m a Star.”
They’re obsessed with their social status and their outward appearance and above all they crave adoration. They’re very creative and expressive people with competitive natures. They want their name in lights.
Think Lea Michelle’s character in Glee – Rachel Berry, channeling all her energy into becoming a star with her name lit up on a Broadway Marquee. And like Satine in Moulin Rouge, they know how to put on a good show, even if they have to donn a mask to do it. Ethony gives the example of Rachel Marron from The Bodyguard played by Whitney Houston, always overshadowing her sister to become the star. Very ambitious and craving attention in every situation until it earns her a stalker.
In the shadow, they can be self-involved, obsessive, guarded, and can suffer from anxiety and other types of bodily stress. They can become concerned with the way the world views or judges them and they can be very dramatic, often causing a public scene. They can use their sensual side as a seductive lure for potential lovers and can manipulate them to get what they want.
Ideal Professions for Queen of Wands
For work, they crave the spotlight. Wherever there’s a stage, that’s where they want to be. They’re drawn to working with people who naturally drive the audience to them, garnering them the praise, attention, accolades, and status they crave. Above all they want to be in a position of influence, which is where they’ll make the bulk of their wealth and fame. They’re savvy business-minded individuals and can drive quite the bargain or deal just like Kris Jenner – "the momager" as she says. Their strength is their magnetism that draws others to them instantly. They often build up quite the following and can either use that influence and persuasion for the betterment of society or for selfish means. They have a reputation to uphold, constantly making decisions about how to keep up their brand. Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift come to mind with their massive brands and followings.
It’s important to them that wherever they work, that they like the people they work with and that it’s a very social environment with lots of activities and events filling up their calendar. And if their place of work isn’t very social, put them in charge and the place will be hopping after a few weeks.
And due to their need to be in the spotlight, they’d make a great spokesperson or face of the campaign or fundraiser, so put them in a position to be seen and they will come alive and shine.
Get them in front of a crowd or assign them team building activities if you want to see them blossom. They love to meet people from all walks of life. Put them as the point person for outreach in the community and the company will enjoy massive growth from their contacts and networking skills. They’re wonderful storytellers and effective communicators so use them to bring people together or to inspire them to act, hopefully for the greater good.
King of Wands Psych Profile and Traits
And lastly, we arrive at the King of Wands – The Entrepreneur archetype associated with the sign of Leo. This king is a visionary who’s driven, ambitious, a philanthropist, and a natural born leader, inspiring everyone in their orbit. They embrace change and are very social individuals but can also be hotheaded, tenacious, and ruthless. Never underestimate this king because no matter what they face, they’re going to create the life they want. If you’re not on the same page with them, they’ll leave you in the dust. They’re so successful because they’re so daring that they will try things others wouldn’t and they never give up on their dream for their ideal life.
In a way they are larger than life, and they often inspire others around them to excel and succeed. Ethony says if you want to insult them, call them "ordinary" because they really love to walk that fine line between brilliance and madness. Anything less is boring.
Their strength is they do the work that needs to be done. Like the King of Pentacles, they have an impressive work ethic, always keeping the big picture in mind so they never lose sight of their goals. They're drive is impressive, always thinking bigger and better to stretch themselves and to stretch what other people think is possible. Due to their magnetism and leadership skills, they have the ability to gather groups of people to inspire them to bring about big changes in society. And since we are in the suit of wands, they could unite people through a belief system. Bernie Sanders comes to mind here with his vision, inspiring nature, and large following of young voters wanting to build a brand-new world.

In the shadow, they’re authoritarians, dictators, and tyrants. Their ego is out of control and off the charts. They’re incredibly manipulative, abusive, and use people for their personal gain. They demand attention whether good or bad as long as they're getting it. This king, like Narcissus, is vain, always checking out their reflection and obsessing over their appearance and how others view them. In relationships, their partner may feel like they aren’t the most important person in their life. So, their partners may be left alone to do lots of things on their own.
Ideal Professions for King of Wands
For work, they need to be the boss. If they start at the bottom of the corporate ladder, they will work their way up to the top spot. They want to be in charge and to have total creative freedom because they don’t take direction well and they don’t like playing by others’ rules. They have big dreams – to change the world. They often start and run many companies over the course of their career, starting at a young age even.
For the Entrepreneur archetype, Ethony offers the examples of Oprah Winfrey, Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, Steve Jobs, and Samantha Jones from Sex and the City.
Psychological Conditions Prominent with the Wands Court Cards
Now let’s look at the psychological conditions and personality disorders that could be associated with the wands suit. Of course, any personality type could be diagnosed with any of these suits BUT given their personality traits and their approaches to life, work, and relationships, I think there are certain conditions that are very prominent among the suits. I’ve assigned these disorders to these suits based on how I view them using my experience in clinical psychology for the past twenty years. Even if you identify with some of what we’re talking about today, that doesn’t mean you’d fit the full criteria for any of these disorders. We all have some degree of some of these traits.
To be considered a disorder it must interfere with the individual’s day-to-day functioning or cause the individual significant distress across many areas of their life – including work, home, school, and social environments.
Our discussion today is just to help give you a clear picture of distinct personalities for the upright and reversed card positions to help you keep the court cards separated in your mind.
When looking at the wands, I’m focusing on active energy and movement, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, sensuality, and fiery emotions like anger and rage when assigning disorders to this suit.
Since the Page of Wands is always on the go, excitable, hyperactive, and overly energetic, the Hyperactive aspect of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) comes to mind. For the swords suit episode, I noted that the Predominantly Inattentive ADHD type best fit the fast moving thoughts present in the swords suit. Here in the wands suit, I feel the Predominantly Hyperactive ADHD type fits best. There is also a combined type for those exhibiting 6 or more symptoms from both the inattentive and hyperactive range of symptoms. Those with Hyperactive or Combined ADHD are always juggling many things at once but rarely complete any of them. They get bored easily and find it difficult to stay invested in something long enough to see it to completion. And fidgeting is a classic trait as it’s hard for them to sit still or remain seated. They’re often restless, talk excessively, have trouble waiting their turn, and blurt things out, and interrupt others. To help blow off some of this excessive energy, things like martial arts and sports are great outlets for hyperactivity.

In part one of this episode, we talked about the King of Wands being vain like Narcissus, so Narcissism is an obvious match here. Narcissistic personality disorder is a condition present in those with an unreasonably high sense of their own importance that affects more males than females. They need and seek attention, desperately wanting others to admire them. This disorder centers around an inflated ego, and self-centered nature. Even though they present with a mask of extreme confidence, underneath they are extremely insecure and harbor deep shame that they keep hidden. The slightest criticism can wound and rattle them because deep down they know they fall short of the perfection they project, and they fear being exposed as a failure. This is called the narcissistic wound or injury, and insults or slights from others can put pressure on that wound, which causes them to lash out erratically. They immediately belittle others to feel superior again.
They’re highly entitled and feel they deserve privileges and special treatment even though they’ve done nothing of importance to earn recognition. Everything’s about them so it’s hard to interact with these individuals or be in a relationship with them.
These people fantasize about power, but it can be dangerous to allow this type of personality anywhere near positions of power. When we see this disorder in world leaders we often refer to it as malignant narcissism.
In those cases, they expect and demand loyalty and subservience. They use others for their personal gain and only serve themselves as they lack the ability to understand or care about the feelings and needs of others.
The Queen of Wands in reverse always brings to mind 2 personality disorders that I see as very similar - Histrionic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder both of which are more prevalent in women than men. But both do overlap with Narcissistic Personality Disorder in some regards.
Histrionic Personality Disorder is assigned to individuals who display patterns of attention-seeking and dramatic behavior to gain the approval of others. This behavior may be flirtatious, provocative, inappropriately seductive, and manipulative in order to capture the attention of onlookers and get what they want. Remember, the Queen of Wands is the Performer who will do anything to be famous. Their behavior is often over-the-top and dramatic, taking the form of theatrical emotional outbursts, disruptive displays of temper, and rapidly shifting moods. They tend to overreact and exaggerate things, assume greater familiarity with others than actually exists, and display narcissistic qualities such as, a preoccupation with their appearance, a compulsive desire to be the center of attention, and a hypersensitivity to criticism.
Scarlet O’hara from Gone with the Wind is a great example of Histrionic Personality. All she had to do was bat those long eyelashes and use her sexual wiles to manipulate any man to do her bidding. And when that didn’t’ work, throw a dramatic hissy fit.
Borderline Personality Disorder is a pervasive pattern of instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, and emotion. One of the hallmark traits for this disorder is their extreme fear of real or imagined abandonment, which results in frantic efforts to avoid being dumped, abandoned, or left out by friends, partners, or loved ones. Their emotions are unstable and can include chronic feelings of emptiness, sadness, irritability, and anxiety, often resulting in recurrent suicidal behavior, threats, or self-harming behaviors such as cutting.
They will often threaten to harm themselves to gain attention or to keep their loved one from leaving their side. They have an unstable sense of self and experience dissociative symptoms, stress-related paranoid ideations, inappropriate/intense anger outbursts, and impulsive behaviors that are self-destructive such as excessive spending, binge eating, and risky sexual behaviors.
A classic trait of borderline is the pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by extremes between idealization and devaluation (also known as "splitting") – one minute they love you and the next minute they hate you. There’s a famous BPD book called "I hate you, don’t leave me."

In the 1987 film version of Fatal Attraction, Glenn Close’s character, Alex Forrest, is a striking representation of Borderline. Once she’s jilted by a man she had a weekend fling with, she feels abandoned when his family returns to town and slashes her wrists to force Dan to stay with her. But when he attempts to pull away from her shortly afterward that sets off her fear of abandonment and her desperation leads to a series of events that have scarred many who grew up watching this film, including stalking him and his family and boiling his daughter’s pet rabbit in a pot on their stove. This is obviously a very extreme example. Most people with BPD aren’t violent. But they may have a dramatic reaction to feeling slighted or ignored. It helps to understand that they are in deep pain when that happens. And much of the time it happens on a subconscious level for them.
The wands are a very sensual suit with the Ace of Wands representing a phallic symbol. So, we could see an excess of sexual energy or in the reverse we could encounter sexual disorders and dysfunctions like erectile dysfunction or female arousal disorders. And I wouldn’t rule out deviant sexual disorders here, including fetishes.
Due to excessive energy running through their bodies much of the time, the court cards in the wands suit could experience anxiety or even adrenal fatigue, which results from too much cortisol being released in those under long-term emotional and physical stress. If the wands cards are in the reverse, we’re looking at a lack of energy and motivation, fatigue, and possibly anhedonia, so we’d look to disorders like depressive disorders, dysthymic disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Being the suit that represents fire, how could I not include Pyromania, which is a type of impulse control disorder, that’s characterized by being obsessed with fire to the point that they are unable to resist starting fires. They report that setting fires brings gratification and relief and that it’s the only way they can relieve their built-up emotional tension, anxiety, or arousal. It’s not for any type of material gain or revenge.
Other Impulse Control Disorders that I’d associate with the wands energy, especially the Page of Wands and Knight of Wands, would be Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Intermittent Explosive Disorder.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a common disorder in children where they lose their temper often, argue with adults or authority figures, refuse to comply with request or rules, threaten others, and engage in vindictive behaviors.
Conduct Disorder involves severe aggressive behaviors that violate the rights of others or societal norms including bullying, fighting, violating rules (like skipping school or running away), and destruction of property, all of which could result in legal consequences.
And Intermittent Explosive Disorder is associated with frequent aggressive outbursts that are out of proportion to the provoking incident and are impulsive and anger based, causing problems at work or home.
So in summary, I’d say that we would often see these diagnosable conditions with the Wands suit– the Hyperactive and Combined types of ADHD, Sexual dysfunctions, Adrenal fatigue, Personality Disorders like Histrionic, Borderline, and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Impulse Control Disorders like Intermittent Explosive Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
I’m sure there may be others, but these were the ones that I associate most with the wands suit. If you’ve enjoyed this discussion of the personality profiles of the wands court cards, I highly recommend Ethony Dawn’s book - Your Tarot Court. Having fully formed examples of these personalities, such as the ones we’ve talked about today, elevates our tarot readings. We only have 1 more suit to go in this series of Court Card Psychological Profiles and that episode/blog will drop in May as we prepare for summer with the suit of cups.
